GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel was host to French President Francois Hollande and his government yesterday for a celebration marking 50 years of post-war partnership, as their countries struggle to find a common vision for Europe.

A meeting of both Cabinets was followed by a joint session of parliament in the Reichstag building and a concert at the Berlin Philharmonic.

Ms Merkel and Mr Hollande have overcome an awkward start after her support for Nicolas Sarkozy in the 2012 election and his condemnation of Ms Merkel's austerity policies.

It marks 50 years since Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle signed the Elysee Treaty.
