The school made famous by the film Gregory's Girl is to close.

Abronhill High School in Cumbernauld will be closed following a vote by North Lanarkshire councillors on its learning and leisure services committee.

Pupils will merge with those at Cumbernauld High School after the 2013/14 school year. They will all be taught at the Cumbernauld High School building until a new school is built.

The school featured in the 1981 romantic comedy directed by Bill Forsyth and starring John Gordon Sinclair and Clare Grogan.

Scott Campbell, of the Save Abronhill High School campaign, said: "We are very disappointed and angry. We believe this decision is deeply flawed."

Despite a six-week consultation carried out by North Lanarkshire Council and campaigners suggesting alternatives to closure, the group believes no other options were given "serious consideration".

Mr Campbell said: "We will now be taking our case to the Scottish Government to request a call-in on the decision."

North Lanarkshire Council argues both schools are no longer fit for modern schooling and are hugely under-occupied.
