WHEN rail passengers last alighted at Conon Bridge, Harold Macmillan was Prime Minister and the publication ban on Lady Chatterley's Lover was being fought in court.
However, the stop in Ross-shire is now back in the timetables for Kyle of Lochalsh services and the Far North Line to Thurso and Wick, after Transport Minister Keith Brown officially opened the new station.
The £600,000 project marks the return of rail services to the community more than five decades after the original station closed in 1960. The station, located between Muir of Ord and Dingwall, has a 50ft platform and a waiting shelter, passenger information systems, cycle racks and lockers. There is also a new car park, enhanced road access and street lighting.
Highland Council leader Drew Hendry said: "This is great news not just for the local community but the benefits will spread wider to the whole Highlands."
Mr Brown said: "Locals can now access trains into Inverness and beyond right here on their doorstep.
"This will be particularly beneficial during the major upgrade to the Kessock Bridge in coming months."
Delays of up to an hour are predicted ahead of major works on the bridge. More than 30,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, 11% of them HGVs.
