VILLAGERS have launched a campaign to oppose plans to build five wind farms, with as many as 130 turbines, in the countryside nearby.

People in the small community of Straiton, South Ayrshire, say they will be surrounded by a "ring of steel" and have vowed to fight the developments.

The five farms are currently at the investigation or planning stage and would all be built within six miles of the village. Many of the turbines would be visible for miles around.

Residents voted unanimously at a village meeting earlier this month to fight the proposals. Many fear the developments would have be detrimental to the local economy.

The campaign comes as Highland Council prepares to vote on a contested wind farm in the Monadhliath mountains.
