Special panels have been installed at First World War memorials so people can use smartphones to learn about the service personnel who lost their lives.

More than 100 hi-tech information panels are being put up across the UK by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War approaches.

The Duke of Kent unveiled panels at Portsmouth Naval Memorial and Southampton's Hollybrook Cemetery yesterday.

One tells of David Bedell-Sivright, a Scottish rugby player who captained the British Lions and died at Gallipoli in 1915.

Each panel has information about the site of the cemetery or memorial and also includes a Quick Response (QR) code which can be scanned by a smartphone to tell visitors stories about the service personnel commemorated there.
