One of Stirling's leading art venues is to have its grant cut by the council, and a contemporary art gallery looks set to close permanently in the city.

Tomorrow, councillors at Stirling Council will discuss cuts which include a proposal to close The Changing Room, a contemporary art gallery at the council-run Tollbooth venue, saving more than £50,000.

The council will look at cutting the Tollbooth's £517,000 grant by more than £50,000, slashing grants to the Stirling Writers Group, Artlink and Artforum, and withdrawing a grant worth nearly £15,000 to the MacRobert Art Centre at the University of Stirling.

The council said the Changing Room could continue in a new space at a "no cost venue without the need for staff".

Liam Sinclair, director of the MacRobert, said: "Despite huge pressures on public finances the value of public investment in the arts and culture has been proven, both economically but also culturally and socially."
