CAMPAIGNERS opposed to a controversial wind farm planned for a site close to the Cairngorms National Park have made a last-ditch attempt to get the developers to withdraw their proposal.

The Save Monadhliath Mountains campaign and its supporters claim that if RWE Npower Renewables Ltd "is an environmentally responsible company" it has no choice but to accept that the application for a 31-turbine wind farm at Allt Duine near Aviemore is doomed to fail.

The development has been the subject of a public inquiry and the resulting report is being considered by ministers. But campaign spokesman Chris Townsend has written to RWE saying the company should accept it will not receive approval in light of the decision to refuse the Glenkirk wind farm application and "should withdraw the scheme".

But Jenny Gascoigne, development manager for RWE, said the company had no intention of withdrawing its plans.
