Proud parents Lesley Alexander and Ian Cumming celebrated the arrival of their baby, named Ruaridh, who was the first born in Scotland on Christmas Day.

The South Queensferry couple's son was delivered at St John's Hospital, Livingston, at 12.08am and weighed 5lb 7oz.

Meanwhile, a family celebrating the birth of a child are trying to trace an off-duty midwife who helped deliver their son at a petrol station in Edinburgh in order to thank her.

Nicola McDowall gave birth at the Sainbury's petrol station at Cameron Toll shopping centre after going into labour on Monday night. A community midwife was filling up her car at the same time and stepped in to help.
