New air services starting in 2014 include routes on which travellers can fly on the world's largest passenger plane - the Airbus A380 superjumbo.

British Airways already operates the giant A380 to Los Angeles and Hong Kong and will start superjumbo services to Johannesburg in February 2014.

Then on September 1, BA will commence A380 services to Washington DC, with more new superjumbo flights planned later as the carrier receives the rest of its A380s.

BA has also announced new routes to be operated by its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Dreamliner services to Hyderabad in India will start on March 30, with further Dreamliner flights commencing to Chengdu in China (from May 5), to Philadelphia (from June 5) and to Calgary in Canada (from July 5).

Form May 5, Chengdu services will increase from three a week to five, while the following day BA will increase its Tokyo Haneda services from five a week to daily.

BA is also increasing its Mexico City services from five a week to six from April 27.

Other carriers to start new services for UK travellers in 2014 include Scandinavian airline SAS. It will be starting twice-a-week flights from Leeds Bradford airport to Copenhagen on March 3.

Then on April 10 SAS will commence twice-weekly flights from Edinburgh to Oslo and Stavanger in Norway. Another SAS new service, from Bristol to Stockholm, will begin on June 30, with twice-weekly flights continuing until August 15.

The Bristol-Stockholm service is expected to attract those keen on weekend leisure breaks.

At Gatwick in summer 2014, Air China is re-introducing direct services to Beijing while from May to September 2014 Virgin Atlantic is increasing its weekly frequency on its Heathrow to Vancouver route to five.

At Stansted airport in Essex, Ryanair in starting 12 new routes from April 2014. These include flights to Basel, Bordeaux, Lisbon and Prague.

Among the new services being offered by easyJet in 2014 are Gatwick to Brest in France from July 12, Belfast to Bordeaux from June 28 and Edinburgh to Bodrum in Turkey from March 31.
