Three former care home workers have been jailed for a total of 17 months after a subjecting elderly dementia patients to abuse.

Residents at Hillcroft nursing home in Slyne- with-Hest, Lancaster, were mocked, bullied and tormented, with one man having his foot stamped on and another nearly tipped out of his wheelchair.

Victims were also pelted with bean bags and balls.

Carol Ann Moore, 54, was jailed at Preston Crown Court for four months yesterday after she was found guilty of mistreating the residents. Katie Cairns, 27, received a five-month sentence and Darren Smith, 35, an eight-month term.

Gemma Pearson, 28, was given a 12-month community order and must carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.

The offences spanned the period from May 2010 to September 2011 and related to seven men and one woman in their seventies or eighties.
