WIMBLEDON champion Andy Murray has confirmed an announcement serving up a possible marriage to long-term girlfriend Kim Sears in a summer love match was a dead rubber.

The Dunblane-born tennis star lobbed his 'wedding plans' on Twitter in a question and answer session with fans yesterday.

Asked about marriage, the winner of two grand slams tweeted: "We are getting married just after Wimbledon. Should be a great day."

But as the revelation caused a social media racket with a volley of Twitter congratulations and claims it must have been an unforced error, his management and girlfriend challenged the notion, saying it was an example of the Scot's dry sense of humour.

Ms Sears tweeted:"FYI, NOBODY IS GETTING MARRIED. His tweets need a sarcasm disclaimer."

And a management spokesman said: "Andy has no plans to get married after Wimbledon.

"It was a tongue in cheek answer (one of many) to a question that he answered during an impromptu twitter Q and A.

"He has since tweeted to clear up any confusion."

Murray later clarified that it wasn't a normal question to be asked online and complained that "nobody got" his sarcasm. He said: "I would have hoped by now you would know that it isn't probably the way I would go about doing something like that."

He added: "When someone asks 'when are you getting married?' Is that a normal question to ask? That's not how I would approach a subject like that."

It had been rumoured that the couple would eventually tie the knot at Cromlix House, the hotel Murray purchased for £2 million in his hometown of Dunblane.
