The Proclaimers beat the Stone Roses in a big-screen battle of the bands after a musical based on the Scottish duo's songs proved a surprise box office hit.

Sunshine On Leith, the story of two soldiers returning to Edinburgh and featuring tracks by identical twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid, made £4.61 million at the UK box office last year.

The film, adapted from the stage musical and directed by Dexter Fletcher, features songs including I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) and Letter From America.

The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone - a documentary by Shane Meadows - made only £0.51m, according to British Film Institute figures. Both titles are in the top 20 highest-grossing independent UK films of 2013 but lag behind Philomena, starring Steve Coogan and Dame Judi Dench, which topped the lot by making £10.7m.
