MALE domestic cats are well known for prowling around larger terrorities than females.

But one Spanish feline has delivered a knock-out paw-punch for girl power by travelling 2000 miles from the Canaries to Scotland.

The female cat was discovered by a family in a neighbouring garage in the fishing village of Muchalls in Kincardinesshire.

After the family gave up trying to trace her owner locally, staff at a local vet checked internationally using the tabby's electronic chip.

This traced her to Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands, which it seems just was not big enough for the female version of Dick Whittington's famous cat.

Staff at Kirkton Veterinary Centre in Stonehaven are now caring for the hastily-renamed Juanita - Spanish for God's gift - whilst waiting for the charity Cats Protection to trace her owner on the island. If no-one claims her, she may have to be rehomed.

A spokesman said: "At the moment, we have absolutely no idea how the cat has arrived in Scotland."
