The death of a 17-year-old clubber, apparently from a deadly tablet, raises major questions about the future of the Arches club in Glasgow and potential action it could face.

Police Scotland are expected to make a formal representation to Glasgow City Council over the events at the weekend and could use recent liquor legislation to have the Argyle Street venue's licence reviewed within weeks.

Sources believe the gravity of the incident and Regane MacColl's age will force the police to call for a review, the sanctions of which include closing the nightclub for any period of time.

The city's licensing board would be required to take on board measures the Arches have in place to deal with drug abuse or under-age patronage before deciding what, if any, sanctions to impose.

Any closure would have a major impact on Glasgow's cultural life, with the Arches also a major city arts venue receiving hundreds of thousands of public cash a year.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Officers are looking at all lines of enquiry and this will form one aspect of that."

A spokesman for Glasgow's Licensing Board added: "Any complaint would be judged on its own merits as and when presented to the board."

The Arches offered condolences to Regane's family but said it could not comment further, a spokesman stating: "The Arches are deeply saddened by events that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"First and foremost our sincere condolences go to the young woman's family. We are working closely with Police Scotland to assist them in any way we can with their enquiries into the circumstances of this tragic incident.

"Until the Police have concluded those enquiries it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."

One worker who was there on Saturday night said: "On the night, the team of security and medics were very professional from being called to the young girl, right up to having her taken to the medical room and maintaining her life up until the ambulance arrived, around 10 to 15 minutes after getting to her."

The source added that the Arches was one of the very few clubs in Glasgow that had trained its staff to deal with clubbers who fall ill after taking drugs, adding: "The security teams are well organised with in depth briefings and they have a dedicated medical room with medics there every club night."

It is also understood, that given her age, moves are under way to accelerate the post mortem to return Regane to her family.
