A woman lost the plot after getting drunk flying home from a "holiday from hell".

Susan Smith racially abused one policeman and bit another after downing glasses of wine on a flight from Tenerife in July.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Smith's troubles got the better of her on her flight home. Matthew Berlow, defending, said: "Alcohol was the catalyst but this was preceded by a holiday from hell."

Smith, 48, from Glasgow, admitted breach of the peace, racial abuse and assault at an earlier court hearing and returned to the dock yesterday to be sentenced. Sheriff Carol Kelly handed Smith a Community Payback Order, telling her to complete 112 hours' unpaid work over the next six months. Smith must also attend meetings with social workers and will have to attend alcohol counselling as and when directed by her supervising officer.
