CAMPAIGNERS used gas masks to highlight the problems of air pollution on Scotland's most polluted road yesterday.

Friends of the Earth's Ferdia Earlie and Emilia Hanna were joined by supporters waving placards and one campaigner dressed as a heart for yesterday's Valentine's Day stunt to show the impact that engine fumes from vehicles were having on health. Hope Street in Glasgow, where the demonstration took place, was recently named the most polluted street in Scotland in a study.

FoE said air pollution caused the equivalent of 1500 deaths every year in Scotland and had been linked with cancer and the risk of having a heart attack. Children, the elderly, and those with health problems were said to be most at risk.
