Scotland's charities have doubled their turnover and their spending in the past 10 years, according to new figures.
The details were published ahead of the annual Gathering event held by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) in Glasgow.
The third sector's annual turnover is now £4.9 billion, having risen by £300 million in 2013 while spending by Scottish Charities is now £4.7bn.
John Downie, Director of Public Affairs at SCVO said the figures showed the vital role the third sector now plays in Scotland.
He added: "The third sector is growing and spending more than ever to help people bearing the brunt of a bleak economy, public funding cuts and growing poverty and inequality.
"We clearly have a strong third sector in Scotland, which is taking on an even more vital role in society and has the confidence to invest in innovative approaches to tackling Scotland's biggest social challenges."
However Mr Downie said the majority of income growth was seen in larger charities and foundations and many smaller ones were struggling in a tough economic climate.
"Forty-two per cent of charities are spending more than they earn because they are investing to meet increased demand for their services and plan for the future," he said.
"Our call is for more investment in the third sector, so that it can change the lives of even more vulnerable people."
