HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition in protest after the nightclub where a teenager collapsed said it would no longer admit anyone aged under 21.

Regane Maccoll, 17, died in the early hours of Sunday, February 2 after spending the Saturday night at The Arches in Glasgow and allegedly taking a "Mortal Kombat" ecstasy-type pill.

The club said in a statement it was ending all under-21 events with immediate effect. This is being challenged by more than 1150 people who have signed an online petition to get the venue to reverse the change in policy.

The petition, called Get The Arches back to Over 18s, was posted on gopetition.com just hours after the club made the announcement.

The description on the petition page reads: "Everybody has no doubt heard that The Arches nightclub has recently been changed from over 18s to over 21s.

"This is because recently a young girl who was only 17 died by taking drugs inside.

"Changing the age restriction will in no way tackle this matter it will only make promoters change venues and force people to get ID from somebody older or buy fake IDs.

The club's statement said: "The Arches has been working closely with Police Scotland's licensing division to review our policies and do even more to ensure a safer clubbing environment within the venue. With immediate effect all club events will be open to over 21s only."
