A woman has been detained by police investigating the attempted murder of a taxi driver.

The 59-year-old man was seriously injured in the incident in Appin Crescent, Dunfermline, Fife, in the early hours of this morning.

Police Scotland would not comment on whether or not the incident took place inside the taxi.

The force said that a 46-year-old local woman has been detained in connection with the investigation.

Detective Inspector John Anderson said: "During the early hours of today, a 59-year-old male taxi driver was seriously injured in an incident in Appin Crescent, Dunfermline.

"This is being treated as attempted murder. The local community will see a high-visibility police presence in the area as we conduct this investigation, and we appreciate their patience and co-operation.

"I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the public that we have no information to suggest there is any threat to the wider community.

"I would also appeal for anyone who has any information about this incident, and in particular anyone who was in the area of Appin Cresent, Dunfermline around midnight and who may have witnessed anything suspicious, or noticed a silver coloured Ford Mondeo taxi, to contact Police Scotland on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
