VOLUNTEERS have rallied to help a man whose situation has been called one of the worse cases of modern day poverty in Glasgow.

The 60-year-old, who does not wish to be named, has lived in squalor after being diagnosed with bladder cancer four years ago, for which he still receives chemotherapy, and also suffering a heart attack two years ago.

Forced to stop working, his home fell into disrepair - the boiler broke, his gas heating and cooker were condemned and a problem with plumbing caused his toilet to block.

The man had been living in unsanitary conditions with no hot water or heating for six months when his case finally came to light.

When his microwave also stopped working, the cancer sufferer lived on pot noodles for week before he ran out of money to feed himself.

He turned to the Trussell Trust food bank in Scotstoun.

Gill and Kyle McCormick, who run the foodbank, and a band of volunteers have cleaned the house, secured a new boiler, anda plumber connected to the group also agreed to carry out work.
