A NEW "social prescribing" service in Edinburgh has been launched to help tackle mental ill health, isolation and other problems in new ways.

The Community Compass project for adults in Craigmillar was described as a model for other neighbourhoods across the country by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, above. Run by social care charity Carr Gomm, it provides an alternative for GPs, social workers and charities in the area, working with individuals experiencing personal problems, helping them improve their health, change their lifestyle, and deal with debt and other issues.

Carr Gomm chief executive Lucy Wren said: This new service which will help the hidden population of Craigmillar who are finding life difficult. We offer guidance, support and reassurance to each individual to help them find their way forward."
