A HELICOPTER will today be used in an attempt to make sure boulders on the hillside above the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful are safe.

It is expected the road will remain closed throughout the weekend, following the landslide earlier this week, as the aircraft flies any necessary equipment up the hill.

The Old Military Road diversion with its convoy system will remain in operation during the day, meaning delays of around half an hour.

When it is closed motorists will again have to take the near 60-mile detour via Crianlarich and Dalmally, or go to the Gourock/Dunoon ferry.

A spokeswoman for contractors BEAR Scotlan said: "A detailed inspection had been completed on site today by our geotechnical engineer and subcontractor. Access was possible to the hillside and the scar slope and the remaining debris was assessed.

"Loose material, including some boulders, has been spotted and as the slope can't be monitored in darkness it has been agreed with Transport Scotland that the A83 will remain closed overnight.

"A helicopter will be used to access boulders on the hillside with the appropriate plant and a process of making them safe will commence. It is anticipated this will take place throughout Saturday and Sunday. It is expected the operation of the Old Military Road will continue in a similar pattern throughout this period."
