An independent Scotland would promote itself more confidently and get away from "introverted Scottishness", the national body that represents the nation's 400 museums and galleries has said.

In a submission to the Scottish Parliament's Education and Culture Committee, Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) said Scottish culture is often "stereotyped" abroad and it is important to celebrate more aspects of Scottish culture than "tartans".

It says: "In the case of a Yes vote Scotland would have to make a transition to promoting itself as an independent confident nation, moving away from the sometimes introverted Scottishness that can often be at the forefront of what is presented internationally."

It adds: "Instead of Scottish Culture, we are confident to think about culture in Scotland in all its diversity."
