Scots ready to follow in the footsteps of civil rights activists such as Dr Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks are being sought in a transatlantic partnership.

Two people who are active 'citizen leaders' will be chosen to become the first Fred Edwards Trust Fellows, and will be backed by the trust - named for the late social worker and activist - and the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee.

The partnership, also backed by the Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC), aims to invest in key individuals in communities to help them become effective leaders.

Fiona Garven, director of SCDC, said: "We regularly meet people who know that they could be even more effective if they had more knowledge, new skills or greater confidence. We would encourage anyone who is already involved in community organising to consider applying."

Any Scottish-based active citizen working on social, economic or environmental justice can apply at until May 12 2014.
