RESIDENTS in an East Renfrewshire village have joined forces to oppose plans for a "major" housing development nearby.

The group decided to take action after Gladman Developments unveiled plans to build on greenbelt land near Waterfoot.

John McCourt, of Waterfoot Action, said the development would "completely ruin" the character of the village and would put pressure on local infrastructure.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire Council said: "The plan will go forward to the Scottish Government for examination. The council will continue to defend the position that this site be retained as green belt."
