A LORRY driver who is a suspected member of an international drugs smuggling gang is applying for legal aid to help him fight extradition to Belgium.

Raymond Urquhart, 51, is wanted by Belgian authorities over his alleged involvement in transporting cocaine and ecstasy across international borders.

He was arrested by police last month at his home in Dunkeld Road, Perth.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard yesterday how ­Mr Urquhart's lawyer plans to contest Crown Office plans to send him to the European country to stand trial.

It also heard how he needs to fund his defence by securing cash from the Scottish Legal Aid Board.
