Coronation Street actress Barbara Knox has been charged with drink-driving, police said.

Knox - who plays the role of Rita Tanner in the ITV soap - was charged following an incident in Knutsford, Cheshire, on March 10.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said the 80-year-old will appear at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court on April 24.

The police spokesman said: "Police have charged an 80-year-old woman with drink driving following an incident in Knutsford on 10 March 2014.

"The woman turned up at Knutsford Police Station in relation to a separate matter and was arrested.

"Barbara Knox from Knutsford was charged on Friday 4 April 2014 and will appear at Macclesfield Magistrates on 24 April 2014."

The charge comes after Knox's daughter, Maxine Ashcroft, 56, was banned from driving for two years.

Ashcroft, of Lechlade, Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty to drink driving at Macclesfield Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
