Almost half of Labour supporters in Scotland believe the country would be fairer if it was independent, the man leading the pro-independence campaign claimed.

Blair Jenkins, the chief executive of Yes Scotland, said a Panelbase poll it commissioned found that when those who did not know were excluded, 47% of Labour voters "thought an independent Scotland would be a fairer society".

The poll found that overall 44% of people questioned believed an independent Scotland would have a fairer society than under Westminster, with 34% disagreeing with this and 22% who said they did not know. When that group are excluded 56% believe an independent Scotland will be fairer, with 44% disagreeing with this.

Among Labour voters, when those who did not know they were excluded, 47% believed an independent Scotland would be fairer, while 53% disagreed.
