A Canadian man has been arrested by police investigating cannabis being imported into the UK.

Detectives seized more than 18lb (8.2kg) of cannabis from two parcel delivery depots in Edinburgh in February.

They established that the drugs had been shipped from Canada and that similar packages had been sent to depots in London and Coventry.

Police officers from Edinburgh travelled to London on Friday April 11 and detained a 49-year-old man at a hotel in the centre of the city.

They also recovered a further 33lb (15kg) of cannabis from a parcel depot in the Soho area of London at that time.

The man, from Vancouver, was then transferred back to Edinburgh.

Police said that in total more than cannabis with an estimated street value of £100,000 was seized along with around £2,500 in cash.

Detective Inspector John Kavanagh said: "As this arrest demonstrates, Police Scotland are committed to tackling drug crime wherever it arises and however far it stretches beyond our borders.

"Anyone responsible for the production or distribution of drugs in and out of Scotland will be robustly pursued by our officers."
