AN elderly man who fell off a pier into the sea as he rode his mobility scooter has died, police said.

Stuart Farquhar, 87, fell into the water at Pennan, on the Aberdeenshire coast, at about 11am on Friday. It is thought he may have been trying to turn the scooter when it went into the sea.

Members of the public pulled the man to safety and he was flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by an RAF rescue helicopter from Lossiemouth. But police yesterday said he had died following the incident.
