A MOTORIST has died after his car veered off a road and rolled down an embankment before crashing into a greenhouse.

The accident yesterday in Edinburgh is the latest motoring fatality in Scotland this week and follows the death of a biker on the A9 on Monday and a woman car passenger in Stewarton, East Ayrshire, on Sunday.

Firefighters used appliances to stabilise the car and cut the man free in the Edinburgh accident.

However, emergency services were unable to do anything to save his life and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police had been called to the city's Gillespie Road at around 11.40am after the car crashed into the property, which is owned by Downes Nursery.

Officers said inquiries were at a very early stage and appealed for witnesses.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist who died in a crash on the A9 on Monday has been named as a man from Norfolk. Mervyn Taylor, 56, was on the bike when it was involved in a collision with a car near the House of Bruar at Blair Atholl.

In statement, police said Mr Taylor's family were "upset by their sudden loss and have said he will be greatly missed". A report was submitted to the procurator-fiscal.

Meanwhile, the 52 year-old woman who died after two cars collided head-on and a third swerved to avoid the crash and overturned near Stewarton has been named.

Patricia Brown, who lived locally, died at the scene of the accident on the B769 near Stewarton on Sunday after the accident involving a Peugeot she was travelling in. The 64-year-old male driver is being treated in hospital. Three other people have been treated for their injuries.

Police said a report would be forwarded to the procurator-fiscal and inquiries were continuing.
