A FORMER police officer who maintains he was injured after he was instructed to attend a safety training course is suing the Chief Constable of Police Scotland.

Gregor Rankin told a court yesterday that he landed on his right shoulder as he took part in a self-defence manoeuvre with a colleague in December 2010. The police constable had taken the role of an offender as he paired up with an inspector during the officer safety training course.

Following the accident he raised an action against Sir Stephen House, suing the Police Scotland Chief Constable for £150,000. Liability is contested in the action.

His counsel, Angela Grahame, QC, told the judge, Lady Rae, that the argument related to whether there was a breach of duty to take reasonable care.

In the action it is claimed that the techniques adopted for training officers in "the simulated combat situation" Mr Rankin was involved in at the time were unsafe.
