MARKS & Spencer has been named the most ethical high street clothing retailer in a study to mark the first anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory disaster.
Ethical Consumer magazine surveyed more than 25 UK clothes shops, with M&S followed by H&M and Zara in a ranking of those doing most to supply clothing made by suitably paid and protected workers.
More than 1130 people died when the Rana Plaza clothing factory building, near Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, collapsed.
The magazine named the most ethical alternative clothing companies as People Tree, Living Crafts and THTC.
Bryony Moor, lead author of the magazine's product guide to the clothing industry, said: "As we mark the anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster the good news is that there are now many small companies whose entire business model is based around creating a better and fairer fashion business model."
