JURORS have been played a 999 call in which the sound of gunfire can be heard at the trial of seven men accused of shooting dead a man in Edinburgh.

The tape was played at the High Court in Glasgow as a witness gave evidence about what she saw from her home shortly before the death of 25-year-old Mohamed Abdi.

Karen Miele, 53, told the court yesterday that she and her husband were awoken by a loud bang on May 26 last year.

She looked out of the window and saw a car crash into railings near the tennis court, the court heard.

Mrs Miele said she saw a man approach the car and smash the rear windscreen.

She said she feared for his safety and her husband phoned the police. The call was played in court and during it the sound of two or three cracking noises can be heard in the background.

Miss Miele said she initially "thought it was fireworks".

Another witness, Gregory Martyn, 37, told the jury he saw a black man struggling with a policeman and another man, who was revealed in court to be Mr Abdi, lying on the ground.

Mohamud Mohamud, 30, Ahmed Ahmed, 28, Cadil Huseen, 23 , Hussein Ali, 26, Liban Ahmed, also known as Jama, 30, Said Fadal, 32, and Said Tarabi, 27, have pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Abdi in the Duddingston area of Edinburgh on May 26, last year.

The trial continues.
