RANGERS fans have paid further tribute to club legend Sandy Jardine, with hundreds flocking to Ibrox and thousands taking to social media to pay their respects.

The blue gates at Ibrox stadium were covered in scarves, shirts, flowers and messages of condolence following his death on Thursday after a battle with cancer.

The club will continue to honour the former defender at their match with Stranraer today, with each player taking to the field wearing his famous number two.

Players will also wear a black armband as a mark of respect and a minute's silence will be observed.

Fans recognise Jardine as one of the greatest ever Rangers players and many left emotional messages outside the club's ground.

One message on a shirt said: "You stood by us, so we stand by you, forever in our hearts, Sandy in royal blue."

Another card read: "Sleep well Sandy. Thoughts with your family and friends at this sad time."

Celtic fans also left tributes with green and white hoops also being draped over the Ibrox gates.

Jardine, 65, was diagnosed with liver cancer 18 months ago. The club confirmed his death late on Thursday night, saying he passed away peacefully surrounded by family.

As news of his death spread, Rangers fans took to Facebook and Twitter to pay their respects. Daniella Baird tweeted: "R.I.P Sandy Jardine, One Of The Greatest Ever Players To Wear A Rangers' Jersey. #legend."

Richard Glen wrote: "Going to the match at Ibrox tomorrow. Will be a very sad day. Saying goodbye to a true legend."

Jardine won three league titles at Rangers, five Scottish cups, five league cups and the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup.

The Edinburgh-born player, who also secured 38 caps for Scotland, also went on to play at Tynecastle for a spell.

Hearts fans also paid tribute to him, with one fan tweeting: "RIP Sandy Jardine. A true gentleman and one of the best players I ever saw playing in the Famous Maroon."
