Thousands of runners have taken to the streets for a race with a longer 10-mile route around the capital.

Organisers of the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run said they wanted to offer runners a different challenge by increasing the course from 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to 10 miles.

The event has taken place in the city since 2005, with runners winding their way in and around the Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle.

Chris Thompson was first over the finish line, completing the new route in 49 minutes and 36 seconds, with Gemma Steel becoming the first woman to finish, in a time of 56 minutes and six seconds.

A mini run was also held for children aged three to eight as well as a junior run for ages 9-15.

In total, 5,000 people took part in the three races.

In among the runners was Holby City and Taggart actor John Michie. He said: "Edinburgh is my home town and I've run for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research for 10 years now. It's great to be here, and there's always a good crowd of people cheering us on."
