COMMUNITIES across Argyll and Bute are being asked to hand in photographs, medals and diaries relating to the First World War as part of a major series of exhibitions.

The local authority has issued a plea for people to offer their memorabilia, which would be scanned and the originals returned, to help commemorate the anniversary of the Great War.

The material will be used for displays in libraries around the area from now until 2018, with an exhibition about the Hermitage House Auxiliary Hospital opening in Helensburgh Library in October this year.

Plans are also in place for an exhibition in 2018 about the sinking of the troopship HMS Otranto off Islay, with the loss of 431 lives.

The council said that in addition to memorabilia, and any wartime memories, they are also looking for volunteers to collect and research information from war memorials and existing rolls of honour.
