A 22-YEAR-OLD man who stole more than £150 worth of alcohol during a break-in at a hotel restaurant in the Borders has been jailed for seven months.

Gary Stewart's haul from the raid included 19 bottles of wine, eight bottles of cider, a bottle of vodka and some Jack Daniels.

The theft was from the La Contea restaurant in High Street, Selkirk and was discovered by staff when they opened up the next day.

Selkirk Sheriff Court was told police received information about Stewart's involvement and a search warrant was granted for his home.

Tessa Bradley, prosecuting, explained that some of the alcohol was found in the house in Chapel Street, Selkirk, and more bottles of wine were outside in a wheelie bin. The alcohol was worth £155 and £68-worth was recovered.

Stewart pleaded guilty to the break-in on March 9 and was jailed for four months..

He was also jailed for two months for a fraud when he failed to pay a £22.50 taxi fare from Hawick to Selkirk.

Stewart, whose last known address was Beech Avenue, Galashiels, was given another 32 days for two breaches of a home curfew.

Sheriff Peter Paterson said a jail sentence was inevitable due to the level of offending and ordered that all sentences run consecutively making his total term to be served 212 days.
