A SOLDIER who was stranded at the side of the road after his car broke down was killed when he was hit by an uninsured driver.

Private Stuart Young, of Glenrothes, was in his vehicle with his hazard warning lights on at the A1 dual carriageway at South Witham, Lincolnshire, when he was hit by a vehicle travelling at 60mph.

Robin Woodward, 32, was jailed for 12 months after admitting causing death by dangerous driving. He was also banned from getting behind the wheel for five years.

Lincoln Crown Court heard that Woodward, of Frampton, had a drink driving conviction and had cancelled his insurance policy six weeks before the accident, on January 5, after being told he faced having his £1300 annual premium doubled after failing to report an earlier collision.
