CAMPAIGNERS have warned of a council's move to end Catholic education in an area near Glasgow after a vote in favour of closing a popular primary school.

Parents have vowed to fight on after East Dunbartonshire Council confirmed last night the merger of St Joseph's primary school in Milngavie with St Andrew's primary in Bearsden, which will also close.

Pupils from both primary schools will be transferred to a new building on the St Andrew's primary site, costing £9 million.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Glasgow said: "This is a deeply disappointing decision and one that causes us great concern as the council is effectively planning to end Catholic education in Milngavie."

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: "We must achieve £20m in budget savings over the next three years and pouring money into old, outdated buildings rather than using that money to enhance our education provision is not cost-effective."
