THE Co-operative Group has taken a major step towards overhauling the way it is run after its members backed a four-point resolution on governance reforms.

Changes will see the creation of a board of directors, the introduction of powers allowing members to hold the board to account, protection against ending the group's mutual status and a move towards a "one member, one vote" voting system on group issues.

Group chairwoman Ursula Lidbetter said: "This is a highly significant moment for the Co-operative Group and I am delighted that our members have made clear their commitment to far-reaching reform of our governance with this vote."

The Co-operative added that 100% of votes were cast in favour of the resolution.
