A HOLYROOD politician has taken his concerns about the arming of specialist police in the Highlands to the assistant chief constable of the single force.

John Finnie, the Highlands & Islands MSP, met with Bernard Higgins yesterday after it was revealed officers in the Strathclyde, Tayside and Northern policing areas have been routinely carrying guns for more than a year. Mr Higgins said he outlined the reasons behind the decision during a 'productive' discussion: "While there was not a wholehearted agreement between us there was mutual acknowledgement, respect and understanding for each other's position.

"We are committed to keeping people safe and this includes ensuring that those living in the Highlands and Islands have access to our specialist services when they are needed."
