Glasgow School of Art (GSA) alumni number Turner Prize winners and other leading artists and writers, members of the pop bands, actors and politicians.

Graduates Martin Boyce, Douglas Gordon Richard Wright and Simon Starling won the prestigious Turner Prize between 1996 and 2011.

Lanark author and artist Alasdair Gray studied at the GSA as did fellow artists Joan Eardley and Peter Howson.

Actors Peter Capaldi and Robbie Coltrane also studied there. Returning to his old studios in an interview with The Herald Magazine, Coltrane said: "I guess I kind of grew up here is the truth.

"It opened my mind up in so many ways. When I came to the art school I was a plump 18-year-old public schoolboy. When I left I was a citizen of the world."

Glasgow-based film-maker Duncan Campbell has been nominated for his presentation It For Others, described as a reflection on a 1950s documentary about African art. He completed a Master of Fine Art (MFA) programme at Glasgow in 1998.

Artist and playwright John Byrne also studied at GSA, as did poet and playwright Liz Lochhead and Labour politician Cathy Jamieson MSP.

Fran Healy, Dougie Payne and Andy Dunlop from the band Travis and Robert Hardy from Franz Ferdinand are also alumni.
