A ROCK festival is to rename its main stage in tribute to cancer fundraiser Stephen Sutton.
Organisers of the Download Festival have announced that their main stage will be named after the 19-year-old who died on May 14 after a long battle with cancer.
The teenager, from Burntwood, Staffordshire, raised millions for the Teenage Cancer Trust and had put together a bucket list of things he wanted to do before he died.
Attending Download was among them and last year the organisers invited Stephen to the festival at Donington Park, where he saw some of his favourite acts. Andy Copping, festival promoter, said: "Stephen touched the heart of millions with the immense bravery, dignity, selflessness and love of life he showed after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in December 2012.
"Download Festival was on Stephen's bucket list and it was an honour and a privilege to have him as our guest in 2013, where he saw a host of his favourite bands, including his heroes Bullet For My Valentine.
"In honour of his extraordinary charitable endeavours, and the amount of joy and hope he brought to people in the most spirited defiance of his own circumstances, Download is proud to announce that we will honour Stephen's memory by renaming the main stage the Stephen Sutton Stage for the 2014 festival."
The total raised for the Teenage Cancer Trust by the teenager's JustGiving page has risen to more than £3.9 million and could still rise further as donations continue to flood in.
Next week a vigil will be held in his memory at Lichfield Cathedral before a private funeral for family and close friends.
