A CITY nursery has received a first-class report from education inspectors.

Whiteinch Nursery is now one of the best in Glasgow, having earned one "excellent" grade and four "very good" scores.

Education watchdogs also praised the centre for its "independent", "considerate" and "co-operative" children.

Headteacher Janette Belcher said: "What stood out for me was the comments about our literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing. These are the core elements of Curriculum for Excellence so I'm really pleased we were commended for those."

The nursery, whose pupils speak 28 languages, was praised by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education for its high standards of literacy.

The report also said children with English as an additional language were developing their skills in English language at a better than expected pace.

Staff were also praised for providing a caring environment for pupils who need extra help, and parents were hailed for their support.
