It is often said, especially by those in the west of Scotland, that residents of Edinburgh are strange.

Such a viewpoint gained extra currency today when the capital was invaded by a flock of sheep, capering their way down William Street in the city centre, to the bemusement of onlookers.

Was it the Royal Highland Show come slightly early (and not to Ingliston)? The Fringe moving from August? Students being students?

No, the reason was far more bizarre (if mundane): Bonobos, a French male fashion firm, have apparently decided that the winter style we'll all love is "Cool Shepherd".

They needed a photoshoot location...Edinburgh...tick. Sheep...get them from Paisley...tick. Real people...tick. Publicity as a by-product...tick (although you can't buy online from the company unless you live in the States or Australia).

But job done. And life in Edinburgh got back to...normal.
