GLASGOW Clyde College journalist Ruth Mackenzie has been awarded the prestigious Calum Macdonald Memorial Award at the Scottish Student Journalism Awards.

The prize is awarded in memory of Mr Macdonald, a Herald journalist who died of cancer aged 32 in 2008. His contribution to the industry was previously honoured in The Herald's Scottish Student Press Awards. Ms Mackenzie, from Moray, is the second winner of the annual award, which recognises an outstanding piece of investigative journalism written for a college or university publication, website or coursework.

The top prize of the night, student journalist of the year, was presented to Sam Shedden from Strathclyde University.
