SCALE versions of waves measuring up to 91ft high have been recreated in the capital — without a surfer in sight.

The demonstration of many of the types of waves and currents typical of the UK, Europe and other parts of the world has been launched at Edinburgh University's science campus. The £9.5million FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility, which is managed by a subsidiary company, simulates scale versions of waves equivalent to about 91ft high and currents of up to 14 knots, using 2.4 million litres of water.

The project aims to help develop and refine full-scale devices such as wave and tidal energy converters, floating offshore wind platforms, and vessels to maintain offshore projects. It is a joint venture between the university and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, the university's principal, said: "We are delighted to mark the official launch of this pioneering facility."
