Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox has warned that Europe is becoming "ever more welfare addicted" and taking security for granted as it treats defence as a low priority.

The Scot, who quit the cabinet in 2011, told the Commons there are "big weaknesses" in Nato's European element at a time when countries have stood by and watched "serial bad behaviour" from Russia. He was also critical of security services as he hit out at the "betrayal" from ex-National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
