NHS staff and visitors to the Commonwealth Games are being urged to report any illnesses during the event in a bid to help spot signs of infection outbreaks.
Members of the surveillance team at Health Protection Scotland are going to use Twitter and other social media to monitor possible cases of food poisoning or illness at an early stage.
Illnesses such as the vomiting bug norovirus and flu tend to be more common in the winter.
While it is summertime in Scotland, it is winter for some of the other competing Commonwealth nations and people could travel to Scotland carrying bugs.
Health Secretary Alex Neil, who visited HPS to discuss arrangements, said: "If someone from Sierra Leone is coming to the games and carrying Ebola we are well prepared to be able to handle that."
